Library Building FAU Libraries
Awards Policy

The Staff Achievement Awards program provides a means by which the FAU Libraries recognizes employees for outstanding service to the Library, University and greater community.

                                I.            The Staff Achievements Subcommittee (SAS) of the Staff & Organizational Development Committee (SODC) designs and manages the staff recognition program in cooperation with the Director of the Libraries.

II.            The FAU Libraries Dean calls for volunteers to serve on the Staff & Organizational Development Committee.

                                                      A.            From the SODC Committee, a Chair-elect of the SAS is selected who agrees to serve two years.  The first year as Chair-elect and the second year as Chair. ( In the establishment academic year of 2004-2005, there will be a Chair and a Chair-elect with the Chair-elect serving for two years.)

                                                      B.            The Staff Achievement Subcommittee members serve one year (July 1 through June 30) with a maximum of three years of service before a one year hiatus.  The SAS will consist of one SP, one Librarian, one AMP employee plus the SAS Chair and the Chair of the Staff Organizational Development Committee (each preferably representing a different library department or campus library) for a total of at least five members.  AMP and Librarian OPS employees may serve on the committee.

                                                      C.            Further, the nominations process should always involve an odd number of SAS members. Thus, if there are an even number of members on SAS, one person will abstain from the nomination process. The nomination process involves viewing, evaluating, and selecting the nominations for staff awards for a given (fall or spring) semester.

III.            The Committee reviews and promotes a Staff Achievement Awards Program that affords every staff member the opportunity to be successful and provides all staff members the opportunity to recognize the accomplishment of their peers.

                                                      A.            The Staff Achievement Subcommittee announces the awards with criteria and nomination procedures to be given within the academic year of its service and announces the awarding schedule for the year by August 1.

                                                                               1.            Award categories may vary from year to year, but should reflect overall consistency.

                                                                               2.            All FAU Libraries staff (SP, Librarians, AMP, including those individuals with OPS status) are eligible for the award categories with the following exceptions: The FAU Libraries Dean and members of the Staff Achievement Subcommittee are not eligible to be nominated as individuals for the staff achievement awards, but are eligible to be nominated as part of a group/team nomination.  Additional exceptions may apply; see the individual award descriptions for more details. However, any SAS member so nominated must recuse him/herself from the review/selection process for the award being considered.

                                                                               3.            FAU Libraries staff members may be nominated to receive an award in as many categories as applicable.

                                                      B.            The Staff Achievement Subcommittee solicits nominations for the awards based on the established criteria and schedule for the year.

                                                                               1.            The time frame in which FAU Libraries employees may be nominated for an award is noted in the description of the award.

                                                                               2.            The description and forms for each individual award are uploaded on the FAU Libraries web site.

                                                      C.            The SAS  selects the award recipients by evaluating the written nomination and forwards the names to the Dean for recognition.

                                                      D.            The SAS is responsible for carrying out the activities associated with presenting the recipient awards.

                                                                               1.            At minimum, the award will consist of the following:

                                                                                                      a.            The recipient(s) of the award will be recognized at an annual FAU Libraries function (social/retreat).

                                                                                                      b.            There will be an announcement of the recipient’s award in the FAU Libraries staff newsletter and Update.

                                                                                                       c.            A letter of recognition from the FAU Libraries Dean will be placed in the employee’s personnel file or student file.

                                                                                                      d.            The award recipient(s) with the exception of students will have his/her name(s) engraved on a plaque to be displayed in the FAU Libraries and will receive a framed certificate.

                                                                               2.            At maximum, the award will consist of all of the above in addition to a financial reward (ex. gift certificate) or other recognition to be determined by the Staff Achievements Subcommittee.

                                                                               3.            The SAS reviews methods of recognition and updates as needed.

                                                      E.            Each year the Staff Achievement Subcommittee presents a report to the whole Staff & Organizational Development Committee for inclusion in a report that may be used as part of the Libraries’ Annual Report
